Can you build a boat from pens, pencils and paperclips? Will it float?
This challenge is to build a boat with pens, pencils, and paperclips or any combination thereof. The challenge is 1) see if it floats, 2) see how much weight it will hold before sinking -- use coins as your weights.
Caution: placing pens in water may affect their ability to write.
Good luck!

Week Three - Submissions
Great work everyone!
Superboy got 270 pennies on his boat!

JBug got 100!

T and H got 200! We hope Superboy will share what he did that worked so well. T and H rolled up one straw on each side. Then they rolled up the ends. It sank as they put the 201st penny on. The water came in from one corner first. Maybe they should have folded it in half first.

Sir Knight's boat held 46 pennies and Princess fashioned a boat that can hold more than 323 pennies - that's all we had in the house!

Week Three -- Boats
First of all, we will have a random drawing this week for participants. Two lucky participants will receive a Think! t-shirt.
Now, for the challenge:
Gather up your pennies (you may need more than 100). Put one piece of aluminum foil measuring 12 x 18 inches on the table in front of the kids. Add two straws.
Tell them to make a boat from the supplied materials (note: they cannot use anything besides themselves and the materials provided -- they cannot use scissors). Then, fill your sink with water. Put pennies in the boat until it sinks or flips. Count how many pennies the boat can hold. Send us the pictures and the results and you'll be automatically entered in our giveaway drawing.
For a simple tutorial on how boats work, go here.
And, we've added a new long-term challenge to the list below. Check them out. We will always take submissions on these challenges. No deadlines!
